Damage Control Tonight RIP Justo Devin in Amsterdam and New York

Tonight is week two of our KPFT fund drive. Yippee yi yay. I know, you're all really excited about being asked for money by a radio station you like to jam. But seriously folks, this shit is important. Damage Control is the only outlet where you can hear real Houston rap music, ever, anywhere, at all. We are listener sponsored and commercial free, which means we rely on you, the listener to come in and help us keep the lights on and the board/transmitter working. $35 a year ($25 for students and people on a limited income) makes you a member of KPFT and gives you a voice and voting power in the station.

So when they decide to cut our time, like they did 2 weeks ago for no reason whatsoever other than we are nice to them and did not act like freaks when they announced potential changes, you, as a member can call in and let them know that you ain't having that. We REALLY NEED as many people as possible to come in and become members.

KPFT made all of these changes because of a supposed financial crisis. They think twangy, shitty singer songwriters is gonna help them make the money they need and don't really see the power of Damage Control. And why should they, we only made $280 last week. We need to make about $1,500 tonight if we even want to entertain the idea of getting our hour back. We're also sort of fighting for some urban music on the weekend. We need y'all. We need all of you to become members. $35 a year is like 33 cents a day to support progressive, non commercial radio in Houston. You have nothing like Damage Control anyplace else, help us to stay alive.

If you can't stay up or can't call in tonight, email me your info and I will fill out the pledge form for you. EMail me your name, address, phone number and email addy and how much you want to pledge and I will fill out the form for you.

Seriously, please consider coming into KPFT as a member in the name of Damage Control. There's strength in numbers and we need those numbers bad now. Don't let KPFT become a bad acoustic non forward thinking bad old wack fucked music station AGAIN. Please don't let that shit happen man.

I know, when there's a tragedy that's the only time that the family's tight. I know. But listen, it's extremely expensive to die in America. Most young people can't afford life insurance and when one of ours is taken from us suddenly, we really have to rally round and help out. Like I said, this is America and no one else is going to help. Don't let this good good dude's family go into neverending debt over this. Justo looked out for A LOT of you and while I wish we could/would have done more while he was alive, he's gone now, taken from us suddenly. Please help his family through all of this if the man ever touched your life in any way. DJ's, I know he touched your fuckin' life so come off of something and help the family out. Like I said in an earlier post, he was like, the first person outside of Houston to really honor DJ Screw. Help the mans family. RIP Justo.

DJ’S AND ARTISTS CALLED UPON TO RALLY AROUND THE FAMILY OF MIXTAPE AWARDS FOUNDER JUSTO FAISON ~ RECENTLY LOST TO US IN A CAR CRASH ~ FUNERAL FUND STARTED BY THOSE NEAREST AND DEAREST

Mixtape Awards founder Justo Faison was recently taken from us in a fatal car collision during a promo run to Virginia, leaving behind a 12 year old son, and a lasting legacy to hip-hop. Many high-profile members of the hip-hop community have come to aid of Justo’s family in the days after his death, donating funds to help bury their friend.

Thus far donations have been received by 50 Cent, Paul Rosenberg, DJ Kay Slay, DJ Whoo Kid, labels Atlantic, Koch, TVT and Interscope and Fight Club and Beth Isaacs from Isaacs Jewlery. It is hoped that many more ~ those that benefited from the dedication Justo gave to his life’s work ~ will step up and chip in to bury the man who gave them so much.

Justo dedicated his life to making sure that a little known and often maligned facet of the hip-hop game, that of the mixtape, and the DJ’s that made them, got their shine. He started the Justo’s Mixtape Awards back in 1996 and kept it going and growing for the past nine years, attracting bigger and better locations and sponsors and pushing the mixtape to the forefront of hip-hop as he went. Many DJ’s, and in fact artists’, careers have been propelled by winning one of his coveted awards and it is hoped, that these same artists will now return the favor, and look out for his family the way he looked out for them.

DJ Kay Slay, one of Justo’s closest friends, has appointed Nelson Taboada of Shady Records/Interscope as the official point person for the fund, all of which will be turned over to Justo’s mother to help cover funeral costs, and give his son something to help the family get through this hard time. A receipt with the donator’s name and telephone number will be given to each person contributing and each will hear from Justo’s mother personally as she reaches out to thank all who have given.

Nelson can be reached at (646) 234.6032 or Nels@tmail.com for pledges or more information.
