Much More Important Than Anything You Will Ever Get From A Bol of Corn

First things first. Bun B and Pimp C are running this rap shit. Recognize and respect game.

That's all I have to say on that subject.

Friendly reminder - listen to Damage Control Tonight for a special announcement. HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT!

12 a.m. - 2 a.m. Wednesday night Central Time

www.kpft.org

90.1 FM in Houston
89.5 FM in Galveston

Before Damage Control, if you're the type of internetter who actually leaves his/her house, you may want to enlighten yourself by seeing the group below. Seriously, I know that underground down south rap and Dutch avant-garde jazz rarely mesh, but yo on the real, this is one of the most incredible ensembles of all time. A bit of a bio follows, but just know this, their drummer/percussionist Han Bennink is my favorite musician of all time hands down. There is no one in this world who is more entertaining on a stage and there never has been anyone in this world who is more entertaining on a stage. He funny daw.

Anyway, the info is below. I will be there. I used to live in Amsterdam and I am telling you this is their best export. Better than Heineken. You have no idea. Come kick it with me if yer in Houston.

The ICP Orchestra is:
Misha Mengelberg - piano
Han Bennink - drums
Ab Baars - clarinet, tenor saxophone
Tobias Delius - tenor saxophone, clarinet
Ernst Glerum - bass
Thomas Heberer - trumpet
Tristan Honsinger - cello
Michael Moore - alto saxophone, clarinet
Mary Oliver - violin
Wolter Wierbos - trombone

Few big bands in the history of jazz have managed to achieve the longevity, sustained level of quality, unique personality, and relevance of the ICP Orchestra (only The Ellington Orchestra and Sun Ra come to mind immediately). Like those bands, the ICP Orchestra is a cultural institution; an evolving community of virtuosos gathered in the radical year of 1967 and refining itself into the distinct and complex entity that it is now.

That distinct entity might be described as "Duke Ellington meets Dadaism". Those who appreciate the reference points will understand everything that they imply: sophistication, skill, reverence, irreverence, tradition, anarchy, discipline, humor, sentimentality, dance, gamesmanship, fun, chaos, refinement.

At the core of ICP are its founders: pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink. The young Dutch musicians were at the center of artistic activity in 1960's Holland. Their jazz credentials were firmly intact (having played with Ben Webster, Don Byas, Sarah Vaughn, Dexter Gordon, Eric Dolphy, etc.). Both were accomplished visual artists (with strong connections to the Fluxus movement). Both were at the forefront of new movements in theater, musical improvisation, composition, etc.

Though they have played together for over 40 years; Han and Misha don't necessarily get along. It is this tension that is at the heart of the group: a distinctly Dutch desire to be contrary and "agree to disagree". On stage, Han and Misha are a classic comedy team: Han - the physical humorist (antics, stunts, energy, and surprise); Misha - the straight man (dour, dry, and impervious).

And the band swings like mad!

alrite mate, bit of a random comment here, neway, i've been checking out you and this blog ever since you had Dizzee Rascal on your show (hearing him over still tippin' was one of my favourite musical moments of last year), and i've seen you trying to weigh in with the odd measured comment in all this bun-b/byron crawford nonsense which is morbidly fascinating in the same way as seeing a car crash happen is. neway, my take on it all is that people like you do so much more for this music than people like him, and, thankfully, probably get a lot more fulfilment out of it too. so yeah, keep doing your thing and remember that real music fans appreciate the contribution that the south has made, and continues to make, to the rich tapestry that is hip-hop culture. if that ignorant twat had ever taken the time to listen to a song like 'one day' none of this would have ever happened (even my dad respects that shit).

i know its cheesy to end this with a quote from a rap record, but this seems particularly apposite:
A wise man told me don't argue with fools/Cause people from a distance can't tell who is who

peace

Thank you GIz, that really made my day. For real. And I do get a lot of fulfillment out of what I do. Thats one reason I am not really even trying to entertain this dude and his barrage of shit that he is throwing at one of the nicest dudes in the industry. Beyond music, Bun actually helps young artists and is a mentor to a lot of people from all coasts. Hes a decent dude that does not deserve this man talking his name with that shit in his mouth.
