DJ Paul Wall to Screw and Chop new release by The Transplants

The who?

Yeah that's what I said when I first read the post on The Screw Shop. It said Paul Wall was about to screw and chop the new record by some rock band. I had no idea said rock band consisted of Tim Armstrong of Rancid, Travis Barker of Blink 182 (and that MTV show "Meet the Barkers" with his wife the Playboy girl) and Skinhead Rob (who I believe was in Wolfpak if I'm not mistaken).

I'm telling you straight up, I listen to all kinds of music, and the homogenized version of punk rock that MTV has been pushing for the past ten years or so is not one of them, but straight up these cats aren't half bad. Local freelance writer Kwame Anderson (also of the crazy, tripped out noise rock/hip-hop/experimental/wig out/dope fiend group Freedom Sold) was trying to tell me that I would dig 'em, and I kind of laughed. I was like "Dog, I'm not trying to hear no Blink 182 shit, and as much as I liked Operation Ivy back in them days, Rancid never did anything for me... blah blah blah insert pseudo music critic snob shit here."

But then I realized they were playing the Warp tour, and figured Paul would be heading out to link up with them. Eternia (my girl from Toronto who is actually a dope ass MC and singer, more later) had already put me on the guest list, as she was performing in the Code of the Cutz tent, so I grabbed my camera, strapped on my cumbersome and annoying knee brace (yes it's still completely fucked and I have no answers, only vicodins, and no I still have not been drinking or smoking anything and yes I am about to lose it) and headed out into the fray.

And what a fray it was. Thousands of young punks running from stage to stage. Like 50-60 bands deep at this bitch and here's me limping around with DJ Chill in a knee brace, trying not to get knocked over, in hopes of finding Paul and the band so I could get some shots to hopefully sell to some of you photo editors out there who at times peruse the real.

Well after a bit of searching, we found them on the way to sign autographs at the MySpace tent. I've got WAAAAY better shots than these, hi res, 300 dpi, if you want them for your mags. I def am behind Paul Wall all the way in anything he does, and this is like some groundbreaking shit and as far as I know no one else got any shots of all of them together, sooooo holler at me if I haven't already hollered at you. I can get quotes for a lil story, whatever, I need the work.

O.K. I'll stop begging now. Anyway, I'm actually excited to hear how this thing turns out.

Paul Wall and Skinhead Rob, damn that's some murky ass Kool-Aid

GU-U and DJ Chill

And yo loud shouts to my girl Eternia. Definitely good to see you girl. Sorry we couldn't see you perform, but seriously my knee was starting to swell again and all I could think about was how at any moment some skanking mass of teenagers was gonna knock me to the ground and send me to the fucking hospital again for this fucking knee that I am sick of complaining about. So I had to bounce. Nice concept though. WOuld love to see something like this happen for hip hop, you know a huge festival, but alas and alak... probably won't ever happen. Finding 50 groups, none of whom have any beef, is probably not possible in this day and age.

Eternia and DJ Chill

Me and Eternia

Speaking of Canada, will Winnipeg and the T-Dot see Devin the Dude around end of summer? I think soooooo.... Soreal...

By the way, I only sort of ever liked Operation Ivy. Laughing Hyenas and Sonic Youth were way more my speed when it came to raucous rock in the 80's.

And this guy is screwing and chopping the Doobie Brothers... Feelin' it ;)

-----

It's June 27th y'all. Respect that. Pour out a lil something for the man DJ Screw. Straight up, seeing Paul Wall screw and chop a rock album is some fairly groundbreaking shit, and adds a bit more to DJ Screws dream of "Screwing the world up." Man, I wish he was here to see this, and do all this work himself. But it's something we can't change. I'm just glad Paul's doing this cuz he's definitely reverant and has respect for DJ Screw... It's just so crazy....

-----

Have I given you this one yet???

The new single from the G.R.i.T. Boys (sort of)featuring Paul Wall - Produced by Mo Betta "Drink In My Cup."

Download it, jam it, put it on a mixtape, feel it. And leave me some comments. I thrive off your comments. Especially during this little bout of forced sobriety. Fuck me running...

  4. Keep holdin' it down, buddy.

And hey, can you imagine a S&C'd version of, say, a Tool album? Or like Team Sleep, the Deftones side project?

    Be fucking weird man...

Yo Matt...you need to do a piece on the newest Houston export "Aztek" and how he got signed to La Roc Familia by Jay-Z by faking a gangster walk. According to this latest interview, he hardly even reps Houston, dissing the other rappers from the city. He talks about living a hard life growing up but from what people have been saying, he makes his home in Sugar Land, Texas, and has been known to lie about his lifestyle. And supposedly got his deal by stealing rhymes from Godwon, another local rapper. Amazing how people give this guy cred even when it's apparent that he has no real ties to anyone on the streets here. It'll be a shame if this guy reps the face of Houston to America.

peep the article and read the comments. there's a lot of bullshit on there to sift through, but it's been verified by many, and i have friends who went to clements - aztek aka mike gomez was a bitch ass pussy who went to clements high school (one of the richest in houston) graduated 03, has a father who is still alive, was never shot, is not colombian, lived in a $200,000 house, has never done a mixtape or track with a major houston rapper, reps third ward even though he has never been there, lied about spending time in jail, took steroids, and uses the word "nigga" liberally.

also, it sounds like he's burned more bridges than you can count...i hope local guys start calling his name out on wax and this bullshit cake is quickly exposed for the fraud he is.

  7. Hey anonymous, I have no idea who he is and I have no idea who you are so I am not speaking on shit. I never heard anything but the Jay Z freestyle, he's never been to Damage Control and I have no idea how he was signed. If he ever wants to come to the station I will ask him everything, until then I really don't care, he can do his thing. If you haven't noticed I don't give a shit about a major label at all unless they are doing something interesting... Which is quite rare.

The Transplants are nothing new and are the shit. Even if you're not so much into the pop-like punk, there's no denying the fact that Travis is a badass drummer w/ great taste and a lot of really creative ideas. Check out the 2002 album Transplants and the breakout Gangsters and Thugs. I'm excited to see what the new one sounds like chopped and "slowed down" The difference between screwed and slowed down? Scarface offered a pretty good analogy at his Roxy concert. In honor of DJ Screw.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yo I was at that Roxy concert as well and I feel that whole thing, but shit man, how else do we keep the mans name alive? No one can seem to come up with that one. Yeah Screw was a man not a music, but this whole genre wouldn't exist without him so I am on the fence with this one. I say call it Screwed as an honor to the man DJ Screw. I know many many people who do not agree and some who do. Thats why I said its a shame he is gone and I wish he could be getting all this work, but if you remember, when he was alive Screw wasn't even open to selling his tapes to other stores, let alone talking to major labels about screwing rock albums. SO who knows man, it's a movement and my #1 goal with this is to keep his name out there and alive as we can keep it. He's still the king...

dude, your site is maybe the best thing ever. Thank you for doing it. I mean, really thank you a ton!
    Epic!

...And I'm not even commenting on the screwed up transplants thing... I mean, yeah, I'm just not even saying anything... my mind is kind of blown open by it... that's really a crazy cultural moment right there... mtv, transplants, that dude, that dude, the other dude (rip) and the other dude... it is kind of innevitable, right? what about some baltimore club screwed and chopped? o.g. ron c has already been making super crazy stuff with that fuck action series... that christina aguillera "beautiful" chopped and screwed is one of the best things ever... I kinda think that this summer kids are going to just go nuts and chop and screw everything possible... indie rock and autechre and stuff... myspace.com screwed and chopped... I thinks it's kind of really going to happen... not that it is rad or jacked, but just going to happen. the formula is just so epic and perfect!... like whoah....
but for reals, thank you for doing the website.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yeah of course man, I enjoy it. Crazy thing is here in Houston as soon as the computer programs started becoming available, kids out here began screwing and chopping everything some years ago, yeah mostly rap, but kids out here been making their own mixes for a long time. everyone is on this shit ti seems now though, its crazy to see the new yorkers up on it and all that.

Hey Matt, the Damage Control from 6-16 with Chops...there was a song of his you asked DJ Chill to cue ("track number 5") right after he left. What was that song?? Also, which tape is the "one day" remix gonna be on?

Any help would be much appreciated. Great job with the show!

oops on the Transplants song off the last album was Diamonds and Guns. Gangster and Thugs is on the new one. On the subject of Screw...I'm open to anything. I'm excited about anyone trying something new and unique. Like any musical phenomenon, when something becomes popular enough, it's always going to be in jeopardy of someone watering it down or whatever. It's all subjective. It's just hard to stomach when someone's taking freaking Britney Spears and slowing it down and calling it screw. Catch my drift?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah yo it does get pretty corny at times... thats pop culture for you.... people drive shit into the ground, its a joke...
